William Simpson, with 45 years of experience, has had his own firm in Orinda for 31 years subsequent to associations with Campbell & Wong, Architects, and Esherick, Homsey, Dodge & Davis, Architects, both leading design firms in San Francisco. In 1985 after 3 years on the Contra Costa County Orinda Area Planning Commission Bill was selected by the newly-incorporated City of Orinda to chair its first Planning Commission and guide the City through hearings on its new General Plan and the proposed Theatre Square ptoject. In 2007, Orinda Mayor Steve Glazer established the Mayor's Award for "Excellence in Architecture" and selected Simpson as the first winner for the Undlin Residence, a new home on an extremely small steep lot: uniquely situated to be a good neighbor while capitalizing on the site's views and amenities but without needing exceptions or variances. While focusing on residential design of both new homes and remodelings of existing homes, the firm also takes on commercial, coorporate and theatre projects.
